The Drawing Grade Exams: A Real First Step

Study — ages 12 to 16. A certificate, and the skills that last after it.

We carry so many dreams for our children — doctor, engineer, architect, scientist. Under all of them sits one simple wish: we want them to be happy. And happiness, more often than not, grows from doing something well.

So here is a small shift in thinking. Instead of only pushing children toward hard goals, what if we gave them the skill to shape their own? Art is one such skill — not just a way to pass time, but a way to express, to see and to think.

Take an example. A child who dreams of becoming an architect or engineer needs to understand dimension, depth and proportion, and to visualise clearly. Drawing builds exactly that. The artist you nurture today quietly strengthens the engineer or designer of tomorrow.

A good place to begin is the Drawing Grade Examinations conducted by the Directorate of Art, Maharashtra (Mumbai). Students who pass receive official grades and valid certificates. There are two levels — Elementary first, then Intermediate (from age 12). Both need steady, methodical preparation. Some schools coach for them; many simply do not have the time or focus. That is where a dedicated class helps.

And these exams are more than a certificate. They sharpen the very skills — observation, visualisation, patience — that your child will lean on for years. Good grades here can open later doors too: architecture, interior design, fine arts, animation, advertising, product design.

Methodical, yet enjoyable

At Chitraleela Niketan, we treat these exams as the foundation they are. Our sessions are careful and structured, but never dull — students learn to see, to express and to imagine while they prepare. With a legacy of over six decades, we make sure every child walks away with drawing as a real skill, not just a passed paper.
